Get your home ready for the summer

Summer is basically here and it will be here for some time.   There are things you can do to help your AC system work its best.  Keeping your family comfortable all summer long takes a little care.  So let’s get your AC system ready for the summer by following these simple steps.  Energy Star has a valuable guide to help you with your AC maintenance.

Schedule an AC system tune-up

An AC tune-up is a preventive maintenance service that helps to ensure that your air conditioning system is operating at its best. The technician will clean and inspect all of the major components of your system, including the condenser coil, evaporator coil, compressor, and fan. They will also check the refrigerant levels and make sure that all of the electrical connections are secure.

An AC tune-up can help to improve the efficiency of your system, which can save you money on your energy bills. It can also help to extend the life of your system and prevent costly repairs.

Here are some of the benefits of having an AC tune-up:

  • Improved efficiency: A clean and well-maintained AC system will use less energy, which can save you money on your energy bills.
  • Extended life: Regular tune-ups can help to extend the life of your AC system by preventing wear and tear on the components.
  • Prevented repairs: A tune-up can help to identify and fix any potential problems with your AC system before they cause a major repair.

Clean off your outdoor condensing unit

Remove any debris, leaves, or obstructions around the condenser unit. Trim vegetation or plants that are within a two-foot radius of the unit to allow proper airflow.  The fins are delicate, so be gentle during the cleaning process. Use a soft brush, such as a paintbrush or a vacuum cleaner brush attachment, to remove dirt, dust, and debris from the fins. Brush gently in an up-and-down motion to avoid bending the fins. Be thorough and make sure to clean all sides of the fins.

Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle attachment to lightly spray water through the fins. Direct the water at a downward angle to avoid bending the fins. This helps to remove any remaining debris and dirt.  Majestic AC can also get your outdoor condenser unit in tip top shape with our annual AC tune-up.

Make sure your air filters are clean

What is the most effective air filter for your home?

If you haven’t checked your ac filters or your media filter in a while, then it is probably time to replace it.  Clogged air filters are the number one reason that AC systems lose efficiency.

Keeping your AC filter clean is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Improved Indoor Air Quality: The primary purpose of an AC filter is to trap dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other airborne particles. A clean filter helps to remove these contaminants from the air, leading to improved indoor air quality. This is especially important for individuals with allergies, asthma, or respiratory conditions.

  2. Efficient System Operation: A dirty or clogged filter restricts airflow, making your AC system work harder to circulate air throughout your home. This reduced airflow puts a strain on the system, reducing its efficiency and potentially leading to increased energy consumption and higher utility bills. A clean filter allows for proper airflow, ensuring that your AC system operates efficiently.

  3. Extended System Lifespan: When your AC system is forced to work with a dirty filter and restricted airflow, it can result in increased wear and tear on the components. Over time, this can lead to premature system failure or the need for costly repairs. By regularly cleaning or replacing your AC filter, you help to prolong the lifespan of your system and reduce the likelihood of major breakdowns.

Couple more reasons to keep your air filter clean

  1. Prevents Coil Freezing: A dirty filter can cause the evaporator coil to become dirty and clogged. When the coil is obstructed, it can’t properly absorb heat, leading to a drop in temperature and potential condensation on the coil. This can eventually result in the coil freezing over, leading to reduced cooling performance and potential damage to the system.

  2. Energy Savings: A clean filter allows your AC system to operate at its optimum efficiency. When the system doesn’t have to work as hard to push air through a clean filter, it requires less energy to cool your home. This can lead to energy savings and lower monthly utility bills.

To reap these benefits, it’s important to check and clean or replace your AC filter regularly, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations or based on the specific needs of your home and system.

Stuff you can do around the home to help your AC system

There are things you can do around the home that will help your AC run more efficiently.

  1. Seal air leaks: Inspect your home for any air leaks around windows, doors, and ductwork. Seal these leaks with weatherstripping or caulk to prevent cooled air from escaping and warm air from entering your home. This will reduce the strain on your AC system and help maintain a comfortable temperature indoors.

  2. Use ceiling fans and portable fans: Ceiling fans and portable fans can help circulate the air in your home, creating a breeze that makes you feel cooler. By using fans, you can raise the thermostat temperature slightly, reducing the workload on your AC system.

  3. Utilize shades, blinds, or curtains: Direct sunlight can heat up your home, causing your AC system to work harder to cool it down. Use shades, blinds, or curtains to block out direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. This can help keep your home cooler and reduce the load on your AC system.

  4. Optimize thermostat settings: Set your thermostat to an energy-efficient temperature during the summer. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting it to 78°F (25.5°C) when you’re at home and increasing the temperature when you’re away. Using a programmable or smart thermostat can help automate this process and save energy.

  5. Limit heat-generating appliances: Appliances like ovens, stoves, and dryers generate heat that can increase the temperature in your home. Use these appliances during the cooler parts of the day or consider using them less frequently during hot weather.

  6. Schedule regular HVAC maintenance: It’s a good idea to have your AC system
