How about the air filters we can buy from the hardware store?

If you are not interested in an air purifying system with Aprilaire, you have many choices when it comes to the filters you can purchase for your registers and your main indoor unit.

One of the first things to consider is the MERV rating.  MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.  It is rated on a score from 1 to 16.  Here is a good article from the EPA on MERV ratings. This is an efficiency rating that determines how the size of pollutants the filter can catch.

Another term you will see is HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm).

Some of the things you should consider when looking at which filter type to purchase is your lifestyle.  Do you smoke?  Do you have pets?  Do you live in a polluted area?  Many filters will show which type of air they are most effective at removing pollutants.
